The problem
Climate change is one of the most pressing issues confronting our planet today, characterized by rising global temperatures, sea levels, and the escalating frequency and severity of extreme weather events, which pose substantial threats to ecological systems and human livelihoods. The defining feature of climate change is the shift in average temperature conditions over time, driven primarily by elevated concentrations of greenhouse gases, particularly carbon dioxide, in the atmosphere. As of 2023, the global average atmospheric CO2 level has reached 419.3 parts per million, a significant increase that contributes to global warming (source: NOAA).
Role of natural ecosystems
Trees and plants function as natural carbon sinks, playing a crucial role in mitigating climate change. Through the process of photosynthesis, trees absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and store it within their biomass, including wood, foliage, and soil. This natural carbon sequestration process enables forests to remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, thereby helping
to reduce greenhouse gas concentrations and consequently slow the pace
of climate change.
The challenge
The efficacy of forests and land in mitigating climate change is undermined by deforestation and land degradation. The destruction of forests, through the cutting down or burning of trees, not only releases the stored carbon back into the atmosphere, but it also diminishes the capacity of remaining trees and soil to further sequester additional CO2. This exacerbates the issue of rising greenhouse gas concentrations and intensifies climate change.
